When God knows exactly what you need.....

(Watching) Dancing my way into the New Year.
I wish that all of you could watch this performance. More than that, I hope that all of you take away a bit of the lesson I learned that day. We can not stop living. We have to find a goal to shoot for. Make plans for the months ahead. We need to figure out how we might bring a spot of joy and hope and life to those around us. Even knowing that it takes hard work and perseverance. A life lived for Jesus is a life that walks confidently - no matter what is happening around us. We need to begin each day, covered in the armor of God so that the fear and isolation and anger about the pandemic don't overwhelm our hearts. Over the past week since this dance show, I have had more than one aggravation pop into my life. It certainly helped to close my eyes and remember the freedom and joy I saw on the faces of the dancers that day. And then I began to sing... "Let it go!"
Jesus, thank you for using ordinary things in my life to remind me of your plans and purposes that don't stop for Covid. Holy Spirit, keep this message fresh and close in my mind and heart as I walk through the next days. Jesus, keep us mindful of your presence as we face conflicts and disagreements, no matter what the topic. Guide us to the people and places that you have purposed for us. Thank you for loving us all. Amen

My heart, as a grandma, for James...
I can't believe that James will soon be 8 months old. The time has just gone by so quickly. I love that I have gotten to watch him grown and change each week. His personality is just exploding as he begins to move around and explore everything. He is curious, strong and very determined! Now that he can sit up from his tummy, he is a much happier little boy. More than once, he has pulled up to his knees and even one time to his feet! So it won't be long till he is running after Grace.
With each of my grandchildren, I have asked Jesus to show me how to pray for them - specifically - even before they were born. From those prayers and pages of my journal, I have created a "Name Frame" that reflects the things that I have been and will be praying for them. Recently, I blogged about Lia's frame. Many times the words on each of the kids frames, come into my mind as a reminder for me to pray specific things. I spent most of early January working on the frame for James. In looking at my journals, the first things I wrote about Jimmy before he was born, were about food! I saw him as a chef with lots of food items. This didn't surprise me since Doug has been in the kitchen (or backyard) cooking since he was really small. But then I remembered the Johnny Appleseed story. I understood that Jesus was saying that James would spread the truth of God's word, which would be real food. Just like Johnny Appleseed, I believe that James will make new paths and go in new directions, as he shares his life. He will be blazing new trails that many others will follow. He will make these new paths, walking in the footprints of so many of our ancestors. The word "innovator" was in my journals, over and over. Someone who introduces new ideas or new methods. I truly believe that Jimmy is a world changer! It seems like an enormous amount for a small baby. But God's plans and purposes for each of us are just as big and far reaching. It seems to me that we just don't ask for the big picture for ourselves, or our children or grandchildren. So I am thankful that I have a big vision for each of my children and grandchildren. It gives this grandma much to pray over, much to think about and much to be thankful for.
Over the years many have asked me how I have decided what goes into these frames. Simply, pray and ask. I know that sounds almost to easy. But that is how these frames came to be. Its not to late to think about this for yourself, or your family. Take sometime and listen (with a pen and journal) and you might be surprised at just how clearly you begin to see God's plans. And because I suspect that some might wonder about my other grandchildren's frames.... here they are!

Year end wrap up.... goodbye 2021
What a year. I think all of us are kind of glad to see 2021 go. There were certainly some very good things in this year, but the constant ever present Covid just kind of put a damper on everything. Right now things are not looking good on the Covid front. The numbers are skyrocketing and things are shutting down - again. But in spite of that, I am ending the year in a hopeful and happy place.
As usual December was a busy, busy month. In spite of some minor sickness (just common colds) and the rising Covid numbers, my family was able to gather and celebrate Christmas together.
I had several other wonderful surprises during this month. While volunteering at the Operation Christmas Child processing center (which is only about 2 miles from my house) I actually got to meet Franklin Graham.

Waiting and preparing.....Advent
It's been a busy time getting ready for Christmas. I started assembling all of the gifts I have purchased and made a list of the missing items. This year I also have a list of yet-to-arrive things that may be "lost" in shipment! I am right there with everyone else, I guess. It has been a a contemplative time for me. Each ornament I put on my tree seemed to bring back a memory. And I wouldn't want it any other way. This year I especially focused on this ornament. In 2013, I actually wrote a blog about that included this ornament. But this year, my thoughts are a bit different. I've been thinking about legacy.
This ornament has a unknown age. I know that it came from Germany. I know that it was brought to the United States by my Great Grandparents, Ernst and Clara Toensing around 1871. They already had four children when they began their journey. Sadly, their youngest child died during the journey. When they arrived in the United States, they settled in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their family grew to include five more children, including my grandfather.Friday, November 19, 2021

What a busy month it has been....
Sometimes it is hard to just stop and look back on the past few weeks since there was just so much that happened! You would think that, at my age, I would be mostly just relaxing in my Lazy Boy (which to be fair, I do quite often.) But here is me being very grateful and feeling very blessed to be able to be so busy. If Covid has done one thing, it has made everyone appreciate times of being out and doing fun things together. And while this busyness does make it hard to find time to put my thoughts and feelings down "on paper" (so to speak) in this blog, I don't want a whole month to go by without recapping it. So, here goes.
Being at Tim and Gwen's house is always like being at some very wonderful, nature area. There is this incredible view from the family room (which has a huge picture window) or from the sunroom of the sprawling forest behind the home. On this day, a very large hawk decided to land on the kids trampoline net! It was really big and surveyed the grounds for a number of minutes. It was shocking to see just how big it was when it actually took flight. Watching the trees begin to change color and the leaves begin to fall, helped me mark the change of season. It is so good to just stop and breathe out every time I am there.A few days after this, I spent the weekend with Zeke and Anna (and Chandler) while Gwen and Tim, along with Lia and Ellie, were away at their Youth Fall Retreat. As the kids get older and older, I have fewer and fewer of them during these retreats. Starting next spring, I will just have Anna since Zeke will be gone also.
The highlight for the kids was for sure the various playgrounds we visited. We played some games, did some crafts and helped clean up all of the water toys for the winter. Anna even painted my nails. For me, the best thing was having breakfast out and then visiting the lake across the street. The kids threw rocks in the water and tried to find skipping stones. I was able to skip a couple and it sure brought me back to my own childhood at the lake. I just treasure these simple times with the kids.
Recently I was talking with a number of friends about the power of testimony. Sometimes we forget just how much our small, little moments can have a big impact on someone else. I remember hearing a very long time ago, that it is the current things that we should be sharing with those around us. The big testimonies have a place, the life changing ways God has acted in our life, yes, those are worth sharing. But don't forget to tell someone else about the little ways that you know Jesus is with you and listening to your cries for help. I love to hear how others have seen Jesus in their day to day struggles. It brings me so much encouragement and certainly deepens my faith and hope. For me, each of the stories above are evidence of Jesus' love and care for me. I feel his presence with me as I go from activity to activity. He knows exactly what I need each day. Being able to be with my kids and my grandkids is something I do not take for granted. It is truly a blessing and a joy.
